EmployeeConnect is completely confidential within the limits of the law. No one at the medical school will know that you have used the program unless you choose to share that information. There is no cost to use the EFAP. EmployeeConnect is a confidential service that is available by telephone or website 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Individuals may access EFAP services by calling For counseling services, an intake is conducted by phone and a search is conducted to identify a local counselor participating in the EFAP who is appropriate for the need, which can take about two days.
Typically, five visits are offered at no cost.
If crisis services are required, the phone counselor helps locate local crisis services, which may include a recommendation to go to a local hospital emergency department. Information about the EFAP is provided to students at matriculation and to employees upon employment. WMed contracts with private practice counselors in the community to provide counseling and mental health services to students. The staff in these clinics is not involved in the education of students, eliminating conflicts of interest that could arise in the assessment of academic performance such as advancement of medical students.

If needed, access to inpatient psychiatric care is available in a confidential manner via crisis screening services provided by Pine Rest Inpatient Services in Grand Rapids, Michigan. By avoiding hospital admission at one of the Kalamazoo teaching hospitals, students will not be treated by a physician involved with the institution.
If at any time a hospital admission is necessary and there are no beds available, the student will be sent to Forest View Psychiatric Hospital in Grand Rapids. Both locations provide excellent care and assure confidentiality for the student.
Independent d counselors serving as consultants to the medical school provide personal counseling sessions, and are bound by confidentiality.
These counselors are not involved with student academic instruction, evaluation, or advancement, and are available to assist students with personal issues. Students may confidentially make appointments by contacting the care managers in the WMed Clinics at Fee for service.
