Me and my girlfriend are taking a trip to New York next week for 5 nights and it's her birthday while we're there. I would like to think of something nice for a surprise for her, whether it's a trip or something I could get for her that's a bit special. I'm open to any ideas. Does anyone here have anything good? We could suggest anything from a stuffed animal to drinks with gold flakes in them, but that would be off the cuff. What does she like to do? What is her profession, or what is her major in school?
Does she bike? Paint pictures? Does she like cosmetics?

The problem with asking us about a surprise for your girlfriend is that we have no idea of what's she's like or what she would like. Have you tried asking her friends for ideas? I think she would appreciate fine dining, but we are both vegetarian so would need to be somewhere at least freidnly towards that, though I've already seens quite a few places to eat which look good.
She loves animals, films, music, baking. There aren't any other particular hobbies she does really. We've already planned on going to the theatre, baseball games, a few meals, general touristy sight seeing, the highlines, maybe a walking tour, going to ground 0, maybe the Ghostbusters firehouse, a few museums, a jazz club Assuming we can fit all that in of course.
If we go to the baseball I'd planned on putting out a message on the big board even though it would be the day after her actual birthday. I loved the place, and some of the dishes I chose were excellent veg. Any specific favourite cuisines? We could suggest places that are excellent dining that are not quite as pricey as the two I mentioned as well.

Here is a list of the best vegetarian restaurants in NYC from one of the most trusted rating sites. You might want to post a draft itinerary here so that we can help you tweak the trip. For an example, I would take your girlfriend to the Bronx Zoo but it's an all day commitment. If she likes baking and is probably aware of the Momofuku Milk Bar how about a baking class at the Milk Bar? We have wonderful zoos the Bronx Zoo being the premier one, but the others great tooindependent film houses, concert halls, band shells--numerous venues for music, and bakeries and baking supply stores.
I see you're interested in a jazz club. In case she is a fan of Louis Armstrong, you might want to take a visit to his house in Queenswhich is now a museum.
